The history behind AAA batteries

There are different types of batteries available for running your gadgets and AAA batteries are one such type. The AAA battery is a small device that can store chemical energy. The modern AAA battery has a very long history. The very first known battery was created somewhere between 640 BC- 250 BC. These batteries were known as “Baghdad Batteries”. We still have a very little knowledge about them and do not know why they were created.

In simple terms, a battery consists of voltaic cells. The chemical energy in these batteries gets converted in to electrical energy due to some chemical reactions. The common voltaic cell used in AAA batteries is 1.5volt voltaic cells. The modern development that led to the construction of AAA batteries commenced much later than 640 BC. Ewald Jurgen Georg von Kleist constructed a form of capacitor, which was known as the “Leyden jar”, in 1745. Even Benjamin Franklin studied electricity in 1748, and started using the term “battery” for various electronic devices.

In 1786, while researching the biological effects of electricity, Luigi Galvani discovered how to construct a galvanic cell. One of the important experiments that took place in 1800 was carried out by Anthony Carlisle and William Nicholson. These two physicists succeeded in showing how a battery could be used to break up water into hydrogen and oxygen. It was the contribution of all these physicists that we are able to enjoy these modern gadgets of entertainment that run on AAA battery.
